A soil-borne fungal disease specific to basil — *Fusarium oxysporum* has many host-specific strains, and this one only attacks basil. Symptoms start with sudden wilting on one side of the plant, leaf yellowing, brown streaks inside the stem (slice a stem lengthwise to see them), and stunted growth. Plants usually die within a few weeks of symptoms appearing. The fungus survives in soil for 8-12 years even without basil planted, so once a bed has it, basil is essentially out of the rotation for a long time. Spread primarily through infected seed and transplants — a major reason to source basil seed from reputable growers who test for it.

Triggers: Symptoms appear once soils warm into the 75-90°F range. The pathogen is most aggressive in mid-to-late summer. Plant stress, root damage from cultivation, and acidic soils all make symptoms appear faster. The fungus enters through root wounds, so anything that injures roots — nematode feeding, transplant shock, hoeing too close — opens the door.

On Dark Opal Basil: Fusarium oxysporum. Soilborne, persists for years.

Prevention: Crop rotation (4 years). Container growing with fresh potting mix eliminates risk. Resistant varieties where available.

Risk fades when: Weather pressure eases as soils cool below 70°F, but the fungus persists in soil for 8-12 years. A resolved alert means symptoms slow for the season — it doesn't mean the bed is safe to plant basil in next year. Long crop rotation and resistant varieties are the only real fixes.

A soil-borne fungus (*Sclerotium rolfsii*) that attacks plant stems right at the soil line during hot weather. It hits over 500 different plant species. Two telltale signs to look for: white fan-shaped fungal growth on the lower stem, mulch, and soil surface, and tan-brown spherical sclerotia (they look like mustard seeds) on infected tissue. Most active during sustained heat with humid conditions.

Triggers: Optimal at 86°F (30°C) soil and air temperature with humid conditions. Inactive below 70°F. Most damaging during sustained mid- to late-summer heat waves. It extends further north in warmer-than-normal seasons.

Risk fades when: Sustained cooler weather — highs below 80°F and overnight lows below 70°F for 5+ days — reduces fungal activity. The sclerotia (resting bodies) persist in soil for years, so resolution is seasonal, not curative.

The most common and damaging disease of basil. It starts as leaf yellowing that is easily mistaken for a nutrient deficiency, with the yellowing bounded by the major leaf veins, then a gray-to-purple fuzzy growth appears on the leaf underside and leaves curl, wilt, and drop. It arrives on infected seed or transplants and spreads on wind-borne spores in warm, humid weather.

Triggers: Infection needs about 4 hours of leaf wetness, and sporulation needs roughly 7+ hours of near-saturated humidity at night. Warm, humid nights with poor airflow are ideal. Improving night airflow strongly suppresses it.

On Dark Opal Basil: Peronospora belbahrii. Airborne spores. Thrives 60-80°F with high humidity. Can devastate a planting in 7-10 days.

Prevention: Avoid overhead watering. Maximize air circulation (wider spacing). Remove infected plants immediately. Use resistant varieties in humid zones 6a-9b.

Risk fades when: Dry air and good airflow halt sporulation. Three dry days with low humidity exits the active window; infected leaves stay lost.

A seedling killer caused by several different fungi working together. It hits vegetables, flowers, herbs, microgreens, and cover-crop seedlings the same way — seeds rot before they emerge, or young seedlings collapse right at the soil line. Wet seed-starting mix and poor airflow in seedling trays are the classic conditions.

Triggers: Wet soil or starting mix, poor drainage, seedlings packed too tightly, contaminated trays or media, and stagnant air all favor damping-off.

Risk fades when: Drying the soil surface and improving airflow slows new spread. Collapsed seedlings don't recover, but the rest of the tray can be saved.

A water mold (not a true fungus) that attacks roots and crowns in waterlogged soil. It's most dangerous in heavy, poorly drained soil after extended rain — basically any time water sits around plant roots for days.

Triggers: Pythium infects from 50-95°F as long as the soil stays saturated. Phytophthora capsici is most active at 75-85°F. What matters most is how long the soil stays waterlogged, not just whether it rained.

Risk fades when: Risk fades when soil returns to field capacity (normal drained moisture). How long that takes depends on your soil — sand drains in hours, clay can take days.

Aphids are soft-bodied sap-sucking insects that cluster on tender new growth. Most established plants tolerate moderate populations and will outgrow damage on their own, but aphids are the most important plant virus vectors in the garden, transmitting more than 100 plant viruses including potato leafroll, cucumber mosaic, and turnip mosaic. Honeydew excreted while feeding supports sooty mold growth and attracts ants that protect aphids from natural enemies.

Triggers: Optimal development at ~75°F (green peach aphid) per UC IPM Floriculture; melon aphid develops fastest above 75°F. Many species heat-intolerant above 90°F and crash in mid-summer. Soft new growth and over-fertilization with high N favor population buildup. Females give live birth parthenogenetically most of growing season — one generation in ~1 week under optimal conditions.

A bacterial disease of basil that causes dark brown to black spots on leaves and dark streaking on stems. Spots often look water-soaked at first and may have an angular shape bounded by veins. It spreads when contaminated soil or water splashes onto leaves, and is worse in warm, wet conditions with overhead watering.

Triggers: Splash-spread by rain or overhead watering. Bacteria enter through pores and wounds; warm, wet, humid conditions and crowding raise risk.

Risk fades when: Dry foliage stops splash spread. Three dry days exits the active window; spotted leaves stay damaged.

Bolting (basil) Stress- and maturity-induced flowering

Basil bolting is not the same event as lettuce bolting. There is no cold trigger and no sharp photoperiod switch - basil is an annual that is programmed to flower, and heat and stress simply bring the date forward. USU Extension states the trigger plainly: high summer temperature and water stress cause basil to flower and set seed, off flavours develop, and plants stop producing leaves. What follows is not cosmetic. UMN Extension is blunt - allow basil to flower and form seed and it will become woody, yields will be considerably less, and flavour turns bitter. Seed production also shortens the plant's life outright. Now the part most gardening advice gets backwards. The universal tip is to pinch off flower buds once you see them. USU's guidance says otherwise: pinching flowers as they form does not stimulate new foliage, and in fact encourages flowers to form in the leaf axils, reducing yield. What does work is removing leaves and growing tips regularly BEFORE any buds appear, which forces the plant to branch, plus sowing a new batch every couple of weeks and keeping the plants unstressed. Cut whole stems just above a pair of leaves and new growth appears at the cut within a week. Harvest for peak flavour just as buds form but before they open.

Triggers: USU Extension: high summer temperature and water stress cause basil to flower and set seed; off flavours develop and plants stop leaf production; regular leaf removal BEFORE flowers form will force the plant to grow more leaves and branches; pinching off the flowers as they form does NOT stimulate new foliage and in fact encourages flowers to form in the axils of the leaves, reducing yield; planting basil every other week and avoiding stress keeps plants from flowering too quickly. UMN Extension: if you allow basil to flower and form seed it will become woody and yields will be considerably less, and flowering leads to more bitter flavours; annual herbs such as basil can become woody, less productive and somewhat bitter if allowed to seed, and seed production shortens the plant's life. For mint-family herbs, cut a few inches down the stem just above a set of leaves; new growth arises from buds at that point and a bushier plant results, visible within a week. Iowa State Extension: for maximum flavour harvest when flower buds have started to form but before they open; avoid heavy nitrogen, which affects flavour. UMN notes Spicy Globe is slower to go to seed than most other types.

On Dark Opal Basil: Heat stress, water stress, maturity. Once flowering begins, leaf quality drops, smaller, tougher, bitter off-notes.

Prevention: Pinching protocol. Consistent watering. Harvest before buds open.

Risk fades when: Once basil has flowered and set seed the stems lignify and leaf production stops; that plant will not return to its former quality. Note that the common advice - pinch the flower buds - is weaker than it sounds: USU reports that pinching flowers once they form does not stimulate new foliage and can push flowering into the leaf axils instead. The effective practice is earlier: harvest whole stems regularly before buds appear, cutting just above a pair of leaves so the plant branches from that node, and sow a fresh batch every two weeks so a young plant is always coming on. Water consistently, about an inch and a half a week, and go easy on nitrogen. Leaves from a flowering plant are still edible - use the younger ones, or cook them, where the bitterness mellows.

Flopping happens when stem strength can't support the plant's mass — usually because the plant grew too fast, didn't get enough sun to build strong stems, or got too much nitrogen which pushes soft leafy growth at the expense of structural strength. Rain and wind compound the problem by weighing down soft tissue. Some plants are inherently floppy — peony, dahlia, delphinium, large mum, tall sunflower — and need staking from the start. Others normally hold themselves up but flop when grown in shade or overfed. Stake early (in spring before plants have grown into their support) rather than late (when stems are already bent and a stake just preserves the deformity). Pruning or pinching tall plants when young encourages branching and reduces flop risk.

Triggers: Per MSU Extension: full sun produces sturdy self-supporting plants; shade or over-fertilization produces soft top-heavy growth. Rain and wind accelerate flop. Plants with naturally heavy blooms (peony, dahlia, large lily, hollyhock) need staking from start.

Risk fades when: Stake early in spring before too much growth. Late staking just preserves the bend. Pinch tall plants when young to encourage branching. Reduce nitrogen feeding if plants are floppy and overgrown.

Japanese beetle adults feed gregariously on the foliage and flowers of more than 300 host species, skeletonizing leaves by chewing tissue between the veins. Larvae (white C-shaped grubs) damage turf and root systems. Adults are active during the warmest part of sunny summer days, when populations can rapidly defoliate roses, grapes, and ornamentals. Do not use Japanese beetle traps near plants — the lures attract more beetles than they catch.

Triggers: One generation per year. Overwinters as larva in soil. Adults emerge late June-early July (peak July). Adults active during warmest part of sunny days. Females lay 40-60 eggs in turf 3 inches deep.

On Dark Opal Basil: Skeletonized leaves. Peak June-August.

Prevention: Handpick into soapy water. Neem oil. Row cover during peak beetle season.

Risk fades when: One generation per year: adult emergence peaks around early August and tapers to the last beetle by about September 1, so above-ground feeding pressure ends in early fall as the adults die off and grubs move underground (UMass Extension, UMN Extension).

Tender perennials in cold climates may die back to the ground when frost arrives. But premature dieback before its time can signal: cold snap below the plant's tolerance, root disease (Fusarium, Verticillium, Pythium), pest pressure (root-feeding larvae), or simply the plant having reached the natural end of its cycle. Annual basil typically dies after first frost; if basil dies in mid-summer, that's a sign to investigate. Tender perennial herbs in zone 5-6 die back annually and regrow from roots — that's normal. Distinguishing 'natural cycle complete' from 'plant has a problem' is about timing and visible symptoms.

Triggers: Most herb dieback is natural end-of-season. Mid-season dieback usually indicates root disease, pest damage, or severe drought stress. Investigate visible signs before assuming normal cycle.

Risk fades when: Natural dieback of annual herbs at season end is expected. Mid-season dieback warrants investigation: dig up the plant, check roots for rot/galls, examine stems for borer damage.

Scales are immobile sap-sucking insects under protective waxy or hardened covers. Soft scales produce sticky honeydew that supports sooty mold; armored scales cause direct dieback. They are primarily pests of woody plants and perennial herbs — fruit trees, berries, citrus, bay, rosemary — rather than annual vegetables. Females are sedentary as adults; the mobile 'crawler' stage that hatches in late spring/early summer is the target for control.

Triggers: Most species: one generation/year in north; multiple in south. Lecanium overwinters as 2nd-instar nymphs on twigs; crawlers emerge June-July. San Jose scale overwinters as 2nd instar on bark; crawlers May-June. Stressed plants more susceptible; ant attendance protects scales by deterring parasitic wasps.

Risk fades when: The vulnerable stage is the mobile crawler, which appears in a narrow late-spring to early-summer window depending on species; once crawlers settle and form their protective covering, sprays are far less effective, so the treatable risk window closes after crawler emergence (Penn State Extension, UMN Extension).

Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that chew irregular holes in leaves and clip off succulent seedlings. They leave characteristic silvery slime trails. Hermaphroditic and prolific, brown garden snails lay around 80 eggs per month for up to six clutches per year.

Triggers: Active at night and early morning in damp conditions. Coastal CA and southeast — active year-round. Spring rains and dense ground cover (mulch, debris, weeds) create harborage.

Risk fades when: Hot, dry summer weather drives slugs and snails into inactivity, so risk drops sharply once conditions turn warm and dry; populations are highest in cool, wet spring and fall, and in mild-winter coastal regions they can stay active year-round (UMN Extension, Penn State, UC IPM).

Spider mites are tiny arachnids (1/50 inch) that feed on the undersides of leaves, producing characteristic silver-yellow stippling. Heavy populations produce visible webbing that interferes with pesticide coverage. They thrive in hot dry weather and drought-stressed plants. The two-spotted spider mite feeds on more than 180 cultivated plant species.

Triggers: Hot dry conditions; >90°F lifecycle <2 weeks. Drought stress amplifies. Broad-spectrum sprays (carbaryl, pyrethroids) trigger outbreaks by killing predators. Wisconsin Ext: 'as little as a month without significant rain during the growing season can favor a mite outbreak.'

Risk fades when: Populations build in hot, dry weather and then crash in late summer and fall as predatory mites catch up, host foliage declines, and cooler, wetter weather and rain set in, so risk fades once the heat and drought break (UC IPM, Colorado State Extension).

Thrips are tiny (1/16 inch) slender insects with fringed wings that puncture and rasp leaf surfaces, leaving silver stippling with black frass dots. The biggest concern is virus vectoring: western flower thrips is the principal vector of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV), which affect more than 600 plant species. Greenhouse and high tunnel infestations can be devastating.

Triggers: Hot dry weather; greenhouse/high tunnel environments. Female lays eggs inside leaf tissue. 2 larval stages feed; 2 non-feeding pupal stages in soil/litter. Lifecycle 10-21 days. Many overlapping generations. Bridge crops (spring wheat, peach, strawberry per NC State) build populations before vegetable hosts available.

Risk fades when: Infestations are worst in hot, dry weather; cool conditions slow development and heavy rain or overhead irrigation knocks populations down sharply, so risk fades as the weather turns cool and wet and rebuilds the following spring (UK Entomology, Cornell IPM).

Leafminers are tiny fly larvae that feed between the upper and lower surfaces of leaves, creating winding pale tunnels or blotchy patches. They rarely kill plants but can ruin the marketability of leafy greens grown for foliage. Allium leafminer is an emerging pest in the eastern US (first detected in Pennsylvania in 2017) that damages onions, garlic, leeks, and chives.

Triggers: Liriomyza trifolii: 1 generation in ~1 month at typical greenhouse temps, 14 days at 95°F, 64 days at 59°F (UC IPM). Adults active mid-day. Allium leafminer emerges late March-early April, second flight September-October. Broad-spectrum insecticides trigger outbreaks by killing parasitoids.

Risk fades when: Parasitic wasps usually bring populations down as the season progresses unless broad-spectrum sprays disrupt them; damage peaks in warm spring and summer flushes and eases in cooler weather, so risk fades with natural-enemy buildup and falling temperatures (USU Extension, PNW Pest Handbook, UC IPM).

Self-seeding (or volunteer reseeding) happens when a plant is allowed to flower, set seed, and drop those seeds in the garden. Many cool-season crops like cilantro, dill, fennel, arugula, lettuce, and many flowers (calendula, cosmos, sunflower, poppy, nigella) reseed reliably year after year — often more reliably than deliberate sowing. Hybrid varieties typically don't reseed true-to-type — the seedlings may show traits of the parent lines rather than the labeled hybrid. Open-pollinated and heirloom varieties reseed faithfully. If you don't want volunteers, remove flower heads before seed sets. If you want them, leave seed heads on through fall and they'll sprout when conditions are right next season.

Triggers: Self-seeding follows any time a plant flowers, sets seed, and is left in place long enough for seed to mature and drop. Open-pollinated varieties reseed true; hybrid varieties may not.

Risk fades when: Self-seeding isn't a problem per se — it's the plant doing what plants do. Manage by deciding whether you want volunteers next season.
