Jersey Knight Asparagus

Asparagaceae

Jersey Knight is the dominant modern all-male hybrid asparagus — highest yield, disease resistant (Fusarium, rust), zones 4-9. Replaced Mary Washington as the extension recommendation across most states. All-male plants produce no seed, directing all energy into fern growth and root establishment. THE longest-term investment in any garden — 15-30+ years (up to 50-100). Plant 1-2 year crowns in 8 inch deep trench, progressive backfill. NO harvest years 1-2; 2-4 weeks year 3; increasing to 6-8 weeks year 5+. Harvest early May-June 30 — STOP when spears pencil-thin. All-male hybrids (Jersey Knight/Giant/Supreme) produce 3× more spears. Allow ferns after harvest — they feed crown for next year. Place at north end of garden (ferns 5+ ft tall). Choose location with EXTREME care.
