Chicory family. Distinctive deep red/purple leaves with white veins. Slightly bitter flavor that mellows with cold and blanching. Forms tight cabbage-like heads. Grows best at 45-65°F. Thermal dormancy above 77°F. LONGEST DTM in this category (60-85 days). Best grown for fall harvest. 'Chioggia' (round head, 65 days) and 'Treviso' (elongated, 80+ days) are traditional varieties.
